Each Mothers Day, I reflect on my mom job over the past year. Together my 13-year-old and I have evolved, laughed, screamed, shared our lives and of course had times of tension and frustration. My biggest learning this year is that I am the glue, the core of the family, the mother tree.

Finding Place

As a child, growing up in the 70’s, that’s what it meant to be a girl, at least in some people’s eyes. I guess I never really fit in then. I ran through mud puddles, barefoot. I picked up garter snakes, and let them slither across my hands. I held toads and caught fireflies. I had grass- stained knees and wind-blown hair. I’d rather be outside riding my bicycle or running through the woods behind our house than dressing up or putting on makeup.
